Hello my fellow Keto travelers! Today was a pretty momentous day for me. Down 40.2 lbs from my start weight in around 3 months time. This is about two-thirds of the ultimate goal of around 160 lbs. I'd like to share some of the ways I've found success thus far, and some of the pitfalls and where I've slipped pretty badly!
Using MyFitnessPal, tracking macros was pretty easy! Over time I was able to get a sense for what foods really met my macros and what foods would cause a really unlikeable shift in things like carbs and too much protein. It was tough at first, but once you begin to log it, paying attention really does become easier!
Pro tip: Let MyFitnessPal annoy you with notifications reminding you to log in and log your food. This will help gently nudge you when you're being a lazy ass.
This one... this one was hard and so many days I thought, "Well, what's another 100-200 calories?". These were days I noticed a marked difference in what I expected to see on the scale. That said, after seeing it happen a couple of times, I found my targets, stuck to them, and the success has been solid!
Short story: Get a FitBit or Apple Watch. This will make your tracking infinitely easier! Personally, I have a Fitbit Alta HR which I love. It's small, tracks my heart rate, and auto-recognizes exercise. This made checking in on exercise that much easier!
Probably had more of these than I wanted to. Problem being, this kicked me right the fuck out of ketosis and it took days, sometimes a week+, to get back into the game. This simply wasn't worth it.
In addition to that, I read all about how "you'll feel like shit the next day" and "it was so hard" and all I could think was... "You bunch of pansies, it can't be that bad!" Turns out, I'm the asshole after all and trust me folks, it really is that bad. Don't do this. Not worth it!
You can read more about this in my post about Alochol and Keto, but let's just say, kicking this habit has been hard for me. "Just switch to the no-carb booze!" I'd say to myself. Well, turns out that not only does this easily throw your calorie game off, but it sure does slow the kick ass fat burning effects you get from ketosis down to nothing for a long period of time.
Other note here, is that on days where I consecutively drank, I noticed I had a marked uptick in resting heartrate. It was pretty fascinating and pretty consitent. Seems like I need to get a little better at saying no to the hooch!
Ignoring the gym occaisionally
Ah the gym... I rocked this for some time at the beginning and then occaisionally I'd get in this phase of "a rest week" which ended up being more like two weeks. These times also noted a marked difference in slowing down my results.
I'm not advocating you don't rest, please for the love of yourself, get some rest, but two weeks is a little silly.
I don't think this needs any explanation. We've all been there and been big ol' fat bitches that just go to town on all the amazing food, sweets, candy, booze, and whatever Grandma is cooking up. I took holidays as, well, extreme cheat days. Not only did I get my ass kicked way out of ketosis, but it stalled my weight loss, made me grouchy, gave me more keto flu, and ugh... terrible.
Just be strong my fellow Keto travlers, this isn't worth the goal destroying outcome.
Look, despite all the bad and the ugly, the Keto diet delivered and delivered in a way that just blew my mind! You can see the journey starting October 15th, 2018 to today, January 13th, 2019 below, but short story is my friends, keep to the faith because this shit works.
Traveling is hard, I was on 125 individual airplanes in 2018 and I still managed to drop 40 lbs in airports, lounges, hotels, and bars. If this isn't proof, I don't know what is!
